BJJ vs. Kickboxing: Which Martial Art Is Right for You?

August 20, 2026Coach Kodie Janssen

One of the most common questions we hear at PowerLevel Fitness is whether someone should start with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or kickboxing. Both are incredible workouts and both build real skills, but they feel very different.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

BJJ is a grappling art focused on leverage, control, and submissions. It is often called physical chess because strategy matters as much as strength. BJJ is grounded in self-defense fundamentals as well as sport technique, and it is a great fit if you enjoy problem solving and close-contact training.

Kickboxing

Kickboxing is a striking art built on punches, kicks, and footwork. Classes are high-energy, fast-paced, and one of the best cardio workouts you can find. If you want to hit pads, sweat hard, and build striking confidence, kickboxing is for you.
